Twenty-four leading photonic, quantum and telecom industry players and academic institutions today are announcing the launch of ALLEGRO ‘Agile ultra low energy secure networks’, an unprecedented research and innovation project, which aims to address the challenges of digital and green transitions towards low carbon footprint of connectivity platforms to enable most demanding industrial use cases requiring real-time sub-millisecond latency and ultra high secure applications.

The ALLEGRO project, funded by Horizon Europe Framework Programme (HORIZON-CL4-2021-DIGITAL-EMERGING-01, Project # 101092766), targets designing, proto-typing, and demonstrating a novel end-to-end (E2E) solution for next-generation optical networks. ALLEGRO integrates packet-optical transport architecture satisfy-ing four key pillars for next-generation telecommunication systems:

(i) ultra-high-capacity from access to the core;

(ii) considerable reduction of power consumption and cost;

(iii) autonomous network control management exploiting artificial intelligence / ma-chine learning (AI/ML) for ultra-high-capacity multi-domain optical systems; and (iv) secured and reliable optical transmission
