In optical networking, the physical layer (PHY) is the foundation—comprising network elements (NEs) and devices that enable transparent optical circuits. To optimize performance, we need a Digital Twin (DT) that accurately models the impact of each NE on the quality-of-transmission (QoT).
🔍 The PHY-DT combines:
✅ Physics-based and AI-driven models to evaluate impairments
✅ Digital Shadow capturing real-time system data
✅ Telemetry and open models for enhanced visibility
✅ Control interfaces (APIs & protocols) to enable optimized NE control
As part of the ALLEGRO project, we are leveraging GNPy—an open-source transmission model—to develop PHY-DT as a service within our innovative network architecture. This approach enhances predictability, adaptability, and automation in optical transport systems.
