In modern optical networks, real-time control and visibility of the Optical Multiplex Section (OMS) are crucial. Within the ALLEGRO architecture, the OMS Controller plays a pivotal role by managing amplifier operational settings and line performance between ROADMs.
🧠How it works:
Each ROADM-to-ROADM OMS is governed by a dedicated OMS Controller, which:
✅ Sets amplifier (OA) operating points
✅ Collects I/O power levels and spectral loads
✅ Shares line description and control strategy with the SDN controller
📘 Two OMS Modes:
🔓 Open OMS – Full access to network elements, white-box exposure of the line, and implementation of SDN-specified control strategies.
🔒 Closed OMS – Acts as a black box, exposing key metrics (e.g., GSNR degradation, CD, PMD, PDL, latency) for use in the Digital Twin.
🤖 In both modes, the OMS controller contributes to accurate, automated lightpath validation, power optimization, and real-time telemetry feedback for adaptive network control.
By enabling intelligent, disaggregated management of optical line systems, the OMS controller is foundational to ALLEGRO’s vision of AI-driven, energy-efficient, future-proof optical networks.
