Allegro Project Insight: Cost-Effective Backbone Networks with OSNR-Aware Design

Our latest evaluation focuses on the impact of OSNR budgets and P2P transceiver costs on total network expenditure.

🔍 Highlights from Figures 45 & 46:

  • Figure 45 presents the distribution of P2P transceivers under OSNR degradations of:
    • (a) 1.5 dB/span
    • (b) 3.0 dB/span
    • (c) 4.5 dB/span
Across all cases, P2P transceivers are gradually phased out as higher OSNR budgets allow leaf nodes to directly reach National Nodes without requiring additional hops.
  • Figure 46 illustrates the total transceiver cost comparison, assuming a 3 dB/span OSNR degradation.
🔽 Transceiver costs drop dramatically—from 70% down to 30%—as P2P transceiver prices are reduced.
  • The minimum cost is consistently achieved when the OSNR budget reaches 4.5 dB, regardless of the actual cost of P2P transceivers.
âś… Why? Because at 4.5 dB, the need for P2P connections is virtually eliminated, optimizing the network design.

These findings further confirm that OSNR-aware architectures not only enable longer reach but also significantly lower network costs through smarter transceiver deployment. đź’ˇ
