ALLEGRO Project — Coordinated Multi-Segment Control for Next-Gen Networks

Modern networks demand seamless coordination across diverse infrastructure layers — from access networks to the metro/core. The ALLEGRO project is stepping up to this challenge with a robust multi-segment control architecture, designed to bridge traditionally siloed domains under a unified orchestration framework.

📡 In ALLEGRO’s approach:

  • Dedicated controllers, such as the Intelligent Pluggable Manager (IPM) for OpenXR P2MP transceivers, and PON controllers, manage and abstract their respective domains.
  • These are orchestrated together via a multi-layer SDN fabric, including specialized controllers for Optical Line Systems and Multiplex Sections (Link Managers).
  • The architecture enables end-to-end visibility and control from access to core, ensuring optimized configuration, provisioning, and monitoring across the entire service path.

🎯 Key Innovations:

  • True multi-segment orchestration across access, aggregation, and core transport
  • Integration of PON and SDN-controlled optical transport
  • Contributions to open-source platforms like TeraFlow SDN, advancing industry collaboration and interoperability

ALLEGRO’s work paves the way for intelligent, scalable, and service-aware networks — a crucial enabler for 5G, FTTH, and beyond.
